In 1923 the National Savings Bank of Albany, New York offered customers a messenger service through the mail . promoting the idea that performing all of one's banking activities through the U. S. Postal Service, was easier, quicker and safer than traditional in person service. This slim booklet, "The Safest Bank Messenger Service in the World : How to Save and Enjoy National Savings Bank Service by Mail" was a concise and yet detailed booklet outlining the benefits of mail banking. ******************************** The Booklet is illustrated throughout with cute cartoons. On the front cover Uncle Sam is depicted as a Postman, with letters in hand and a mail pouch over his shoulder. Behind him flies the American Eagle. The first page of text reads as follows : "More than 12,000 depositors of the NATIONAL SAVINGS BANK live within an area of 200 miles outside the City of Albany, and are constantly depositing and withdrawing thousands of dollars through the United States Mails with perfect safety and promptness. Present Rate of Interest : 4 1/2 %, Per annum, Compounded Semi-Annually." ********************************** On the inside of the rear cover, we learn that the Bank was chartered in 1868. In 1923 the Bank President was Frederic B. Stevens; Vice-Presidents were Charles Gibson and Jonas Muhlfelder, and the Treasurer was Ralph Bult.
