Item description from seller

Very Good+. Original staple-bound photographic wrappers remain clean and attractive, with mild age-related fading and toning and only minimal shelf, edge, and corner wear. Interior is clean and unmarked, with no ownership inscriptions, highlighting, underlining, tears, or missing pages observed. Black-and-white photographic reproductions remain clean and well preserved. Stapled binding is sound and secure. No dust jacket, as issued. A particularly well-preserved example of this scarce early Sally Mann exhibition catalogue. First edition, first printing—and the first and only edition of this original 1988 exhibition catalogue—published in conjunction with “Sally Mann: Still Time,” held at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center in Clifton Forge, Virginia, from September 6 through October 8, 1988. Photographs, introductory text, and artist’s statement by Sally Mann, with a foreword by Bari Ballou. This early retrospective surveys Mann’s photographic work from 1971 through 1988, including selections from her landscapes, the Lewis Law Portfolio, portraits, platinum prints, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women, and early family photographs. The catalogue reproduces 15 of the 37 prints included in the exhibition and contains black-and-white photographic plates, a photograph of the artist, biographical information, institutional collections, publication history, and acknowledgments. The cover photograph is “Jessie at Five,” 1987. This scarce regional exhibition publication documents Sally Mann’s artistic development immediately before the international recognition generated by Immediate Family. It predates—and is bibliographically distinct from—the substantially larger Aperture publication titled Still Time, issued in 1994. Specialist listings likewise identify the 1988 catalogue as a separate early exhibition publication. An important early Sally Mann catalogue with particular appeal to collectors of twentieth-century photography, women photographers, exhibition catalogues, Southern art, and significant American photobooks.
