About this Item
Octavo. Frontispiece, 270pp. German text, fraktur. Five plates in text. Scarce study of Ferdinand von Schill and Adolph von Luekow. Once Napoleon was defeated in 1815, German historiography for the next century wrote about the "loyal rebels" which saw as heroes Fedinand von Schill, Adolf von Lutzoa and Queen Luise. Most prominent was Major Ferdinand von Schill who had disobeyed King Frederick William III and raised a revolt against Napoleon in 1809 which led to his martyrdom in German thought. Adolf von Lutzow took center stage in the German writing of textbooks and his followers were largely German idealists who fought for freedom. Bound in ¼ light brown cloth over color pictorial paper covered boards, lettering brown, spine plain, previous owner's name to front blank and title page, to newspaper clipping mounted to front and rear end papers. A very good copy showing light wear to spine ends. Seller Inventory # 028550
