Theodore Dwight Jr. (1796 Š 1866) was an author, translator, educator, and political reformer who aligned himself with numerous and varied causes throughout his comparatively long and storied life. Born in Hartford Connecticut, Dwight Jr. was the scion of an accomplished and prosperous family. His uncle, Timothy Dwight, was then president of Yale, which Theodore attended beginning at the age of 14. Dwight Jr. travelled extensively in Europe, cultivating numerous languages, and developing a deep fascination with the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. Domestically, Dwight Jr. was an abolitionist, an enthusiastic proponent of Calvinism, and a frequent author on education. He founded several periodicals, including The New York Daily Advertiser (which he co-edited with his father), and, later, DwightÕs American Magazine. He died tragically in New York City, crushed between two train cars.
