Bound in half cloth over paper-covered boards illustrated with a picture of a Taoist Genii, gilt lettering stamped on spine. The illustration is reprinted on the dust jacket, presented here in nice condition: closed tears at head and tail of spine, some age-toning to rear panel, front flap clipped at lower corner, presumably where British price was printed; price of $10 intact on upper corner. First volume in Needham's monumental series documenting the rise of Chinese technological advances and the subsequent inward turn resulting in decline. This first volume is introductory, underscoring special problems of the Chinese language, geography, history and pre-history, illuminating opposing views of those problems, and vanquishing the wrong-headed views with dispatch, per Kenneth Rexroth in his overview of the set found at the online Bureau of Public Secrets.
