Lowell Thomas, the renowned American writer, broadcaster and documentary film maker, who had already brought the story of Lawrence of Arabia to the world, related the story of Count von Luckner and his exploits in the Pacific as the captain of the German commerce raider Seeadler in Count Luckner: The Sea Devil, which was published in 1927. Thomas met von Luckner again when the Count toured the United States with his wife on a lecturing tour. The Sea Devil's Fo'c'sle is thus a collection of von Luckner's tales of droll events and heavy perils at sea drawn from what Thomas described as 'a treasure hoard? of beguiling sea yarns, incidents of his own life and talks he heard told by old seadogs in many a fo'c'sle.'.
