Item description from seller
iix+84 pages with tables (some foldout), photographs, maps and appendices. American Anthropologist Volume 57, number 1, part 2. Memoir number 80. First edition. The main assumptions with which the study begins are as follows: (1) In the early stages of development there are many features in indigenous cultures which have a positive supporting role to play, and without which local businesses might never engage. (2) The criteria of successful economic development should not necessarily be those which are applicable in our own society; the criteria are relative to the social context. (3) Economic development is not truly separate from, but is part and parcel with, that types of commercial activity and forms of organization are related to local values. (4) Though the society I describe has made remarkable progress in certain limited fields, it still needs help and guidance for successful change; but this guidance, if unaware of the implications of the above three assumptions, is just as likely to do harm as good. Condition: Light edge wear else a better than very good copy.
