1933. First UK edition. vi, 301pp., and 4 black and white illustrations. Essad-Bey was a pen name of Lev Nussimbaum (1905-1942), a writer and journalist, born in Kiev to a Jewish family. He lived there and in Baku during his childhood before fleeing the Bolsheviks in 1920 at the age of 14. In 1922 he claimed that he had converted to Islam. He created a niche for himself in the competitive European literary world by writing about topics that Westerners, in general, knew little about - the Caucasus, the Russian Empire, the Bolshevik Revolution, newly discovered oil, and Islam. This is his work on the origins, founding and development of the O.G.P.U., the intelligence and state security service and secret police of the Soviet Union from 1923 to 1934. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in fair to good condition with shelf wear, some soiling and some fraying to the spine and corners. Light foxing to edges, endpapers and prelims. Previous owners' names to ffep and to fore edge. A good working copy of a scarce title.
