Landscape 12mo. 9pp. Illustrated with 55 (of 56) full page numbered, tinted lithographs showing side views of a large range of two-wheeled and four-wheeled carriages. The first text page lists the various types of carriages that were exhibited: Broughams, Landaus, Victorias, Carts, Vans and Wagons, Park and Pony Phaetons, Sociables and Barouches, Omnibuses, Buggies, Drags, Mail and Stanhope Phaetons, Sporting and Spider Phaetons, Wagonettes and Char-au-Bancs, Sleighs, Droschkies, Carioles, Landaulettes, Cabs, Chariots and Coaches. This is followed by 6 leaves of descriptive text (printed on one side only) and then the plates. An exceptionally rare reference work cataloguing many types and styles of horse carriages available in the latter half of the 19th century. Copac locates only one copy held by an institutional library in the UK (The National Trust library). Worldcat locates no other copies held in any institutional library worldwide. Other than this copy, only one other copy has ever been offered for sale at auction (Bonhams, 2006). Bound in the publisher s original cloth with a gold monogram and simple design stamped onto the front cover. Professionally rebacked with the original spine laid down. Rear cover a little faded, slightly stained and slightly bubbled . A 1cm tear to the lower margin (only) of the first two text pages. Occasional very light foxing to the margins of a few of the plates. Lacking one plate (plate no.31). Otherwise, a clean copy of a very rare work with the page block sound and the binding in good condition. Further photographs available on request.
