"The poem on Charles Darwin as here given is only a selection, amounting in all to about a quarter, of the poem as written and privately printed by Mr. Romanes" (Note, p. xiii). "Charles Darwin: A Memorial Poem " is pp. 1-28 in this volume. Romanes's book "Poems 1879-1889", in which the complete poem on Charles Darwin first appeared (pp. [81]-195), was published anonymously in 1889, and privately printed by Harrison & Sons. In 1889 Romanes was still alive. He died in 1894. Mr. T. Herbert Warren, President of Magdalen College, Oxford, wrote the "Introduction" (pp. v-xii).
