1821. First edition thus. 518pp. plus an 84 page supplement and a frontispiece portrait of Hervey. James Hervey (1714-1758) was an English clergyman and writer. His best known work is probably his 'Meditations and Contemplations', said to have been modelled on Robert Boyle's Occasional Reflexions on various Subjects. Within fourteen years passed through as many editions. The volume for sale contains letters from various collections published in 1760, 1782, and 1810, to which is added, a considerable number of original letters, not in any former collection, and a collection of sermons. The collection was first published in 1815, and this edition from 1821 has a supplement containing 9 further letters. The book is bound in contemporary full leather boardsd with a leather title label on the spine. Both boards of the book are detached but the text block is tight. The leather on the boards is scuffed with some staining and the corners are worn with a little loss. There is also a little loss to the leather at both spine ends. The contents mostly clean although the book does suffer from foxing throughout. Some of the pages are lightly foxed although most are moderatley foxed with a few being heavily affected, including the frontispiece. The title page is browned with fairly light foxing and offsetting from the frontispiece. A name and date (1829) has been written on the two front free endpapers.
