Carl W. Dipman, longtime editor of The Progressive Grocer, wrote it w/ retail analysts Robert W. Mueller and Ralph E. Head for independent grocers and regional chains rebuilding their stores in the post-war expansion. Chapters work through customer traffic patterns, checkout island placement, department square footage, inventory turnover and commercial lighting. The text is extensively illustrated w/ dimensioned fixture schematics, store floor plans and black and white photographic plates of mid-century markets, among them Grand Union, Piggly Wiggly and Stop & Shop. Technical diagrams cover tiered bakery racks, open refrigerated dairy housings, produce misting racks and the prepackaging stations that replaced counter slicing and weighing in butcher and dairy departments. Sections on customer cart circulation, refrigerated meat display counters and promotional display mechanics carry the same dimensioned treatment. Published in New York by The Progressive Grocer division of The Butterick Company, the volume records the moment grocery retailing became an engineered industry. Carl W. Dipman edited The Progressive Grocer for decades and wrote earlier trade volumes including The Modern Grocery Store of 1931, while Robert W. Mueller and Ralph E. Head tracked post-war consumer habits and supermarket economics. Business historians, architectural collections and scholars of mid-century commercial design treat it as a primary source for store layout, package design and retail ergonomics of the 1940s. …

Shipping terms
DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
We offer a choice of media mail (when applicable), first class, priority and/or expedited whenever possible. Choices for shipping methods vary and will appear at checkout (as well as additional opportunities to purchase insurance, extra insurance, etc.). All domestic orders include tracking.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
International shipping has become increasingly complex, but we do our best to keep up. If you have any questions regarding shipping to your country, feel free to reach out before you order. We will do our best to give you an exact quote.
All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
**VAT, Fees & Taxes: **
Where your country requires, and when under the value threshold set by your country, VAT is collected at checkout and remitted by the marketplace you ordered through. Any additional fees, duties, or taxes your country or carrier charges upon arrival are the buyer's responsibility (collected by your postal service or carrier when the package is delivered). The one exception is the European Union (see below).
The European Union:
As of 2026, the EU has added a new customs duty on every parcel entering the Union. Because of this, we are now required to prepay all duty and customs (DDP) before shipping, which is why you may notice that our EU rates run significantly higher than other countries. Additionally, on orders over 150 Euros, the full VAT tax due, over and above €150, is most often not collected by marketplaces at checkout. We may contact you through the marketplace you ordered to collect these additional VAT fees before shipping.
Typical speeds:
Although customs and overseas carrier delays sometimes happen and are outside of our control, the following should be a good guide (Business days only). If you need it faster, feel free to reach out. Sometimes we can achieve the “almost” impossible :)
