Add to basketSan Francisco: The Nature Company, 1990. First edition thus, first printing. Hardcover. Green cloth, issued without dust jacket, housed in publisher's illustrated slipcase. Fine in a fine slipcase. A tight, clean copy with no faults. Quarto, unpaginated, with color photographs by William Neill. ISBN not stated. "The Sense of Wonder" was first published as an essay, "Help Your Child to Wonder," in Woman's Home Companion in 1956 and later expanded into book form by Harper & Row in 1965 with black-and-white photographs. This 1990 edition, produced by The Nature Company, reissues Rachel Carson's classic meditation on cultivating a child's awe and respect for the natural world, now paired with William Neill's color photographs. (A later 1998 edition featured photographs by Nick Kelsh.) Carson (1907-1964) was a marine biologist and conservationist whose landmark work "Silent Spring" helped launch the modern environmental movement. "The Sense of Wonder," published posthumously, extends her influence to new generations by uniting her prose with visual art. William Neill (b. 1954) is an American landscape photographer known for conveying the spiritual beauty of the natural world. A longtime Yosemite resident, he worked in the early 1980s as staff photographer at The Ansel Adams Gallery and has since exhibited widely. He received the Sierra Club s Ansel Adams Award for conservation photography in 1995, and his work is celebrated for its contemplative focus on detail, mystery, and intimacy in the landscape.
