First Edition. Large 8vo., Publisher s cloth. 614pp. [8] ads. A neat, sound copy. Octavo in publisher's original decoratively embossed brown cloth with gilt title and credits to spine. Cloth lightly worn in a few places at edges, corners bumped. Hard to find, let alone in sound clean condition - a very good copy of this classic. Alexander Bain (11 June 1818 18 September 1903) was a Scottish philosopher and educationalist in the British school of empiricism and a prominent and innovative figure in the fields of psychology, linguistics, logic, moral philosophy and education reform. He founded Mind, the first ever journal of psychology and analytical philosophy, and was the leading figure in establishing and applying the scientific method to psychology. Sense and the Intellect is divided into two parts, with the first part focusing on the senses and the second part focusing on the intellect. In the first part, Bain examines the different senses, including touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight. He discusses how each sense works and how they interact with each other to create our perception of the world around us. He also explores how our senses can be deceived and how our perceptions can be altered by external factors. In the second part, Bain delves into the workings of the intellect, discussing topics such as memory, imagination, and reasoning. He examines how the intellect processes information and how it can be trained and developed. He also discusses the role of emotions in the intellectual process and how they can affect our thinking. Both The Senses and the Intellect and The Emotions and the Will established Bain as a foundational contributor to the newly emerging study of psychology. His insistence on explanations rooted in physiology provided validity to his insights of philosophical origin. Despite mixed receptions, Bain's ideas had a lasting influence. His attempt to bring together psychology and physiology foreshadowed the later development of behaviorism and experimental psychology in the 20th century. The Senses and the Intellect marks a transition from a purely philosophical and introspective approach to psychology. (Wikipedia).…
