Add to basketIn 1922 the Oregon government adopted a law that required that every child of school age attend a government school. The law was backed by the Ku Klux Klan, which wanted to destroy Catholic schools. The law was challenged by the Society of Sisters, a Catholic organization. In overturning the law, the Supreme Court of the United States declared that it is beyond the power of the state to compel all children to attend government schools. "The child is not the mere creature of the state.".
