The first editions of these five volumes in the publisher's original cloth bindings.Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free end paper of Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E. and The Lieutenant and Others, and to the front paste down of No Man's Land. Newspaper cutting has been pasted to the verso of the front free end paper of The Lieutenant and Others. Five short story collections by Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937), originally written for the Daily Mail under the pseudonym of "Sapper". As serving officers in the British Army were not permitted to publish works under their own names, he was given the name "Sapper" by Lord Northcliffe, owner of the Daily Mail.McNeile was one of the most successful British popular authors of theinter-war period. He drew upon his experiences in the trenches during the First World War.The books in this set are first editions, including a first edition copy of his first published work in book form, Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E. The set comprises: Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E. (1915) The Lieutenant and Others (1916) No Man's Land (1917) The Human Touch (1918) Shorty Bill (1926)Shorty Billis undated; dated through copies held at the British Library. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart with fading to the spines and light shelf wear to the extremities. Front hinge is tender and rear hinge is slightly strained to 'No Man's Land', but both hinges remain firmly held by cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting and spotting to the end papers. A little age toning to the pages of 'The Human Touch'. Scattered spotting to the fore edge of 'Shorty Bill', affecting the occasional page. Very Good.…
