About the Author

Gary and Laura Maurer are devotees of mid-twentieth century modern design. The Maurers' first Russel Wright acquisition, over 15 years ago, was four place settings of American Modern dishes in Granite Gray. This purchase ignited a passion. Considered among the most prominent collectors of furniture and housewares designed by Russel and Mary Wright, their collection includes over 5,000 works ranging from a Wright piano to Wright teaspoons. The Maurers have lent portions of their collection, including tablecloths featured in this publication, to national exhibitions. Their pieces were included in Russel Wright:Living with Good Design, which opened in May 2006 at the Decorative Arts Center, Lancaster, Ohio and traveled to five additional museums through April 2008, and Wright at Home:Modern Lifestyle Design 1930-1965, which ran at the San Francisco Airport Museums from March through October 2009. Their collection also includes works by Eva Zeisel, American painting-especially Surrealism-and mid-century modern furniture. Gary recently retired as a partner of an investment management firm in Chicago, and he has been on the Board of Directors of Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center since 2006. Laura is retired from a career in grants management and social service administration.
