RUDYARD KIPLING THE SEVEN SEAS 1896 1ST AMERICAN EDITION ART NOUVEAU COVER. I have been delayed in listing this book because I became a bit fixated on finding out who designed the lovely art nouveau book cover and signed it EMD . I was unsuccessful in my quest and would welcome being informed by more knowledgeable collectors. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 209 pages + 6 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by D. Appleton and Company of New York, dated 1896, the first American edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. The grayish green boards are lavishing decorated with an embossed and gilt art nouveau floral design and titles on both cover and spine. This book is a collection of Kipling s writings in verse. There is a newspaper clipping from the January 24, 1936 New York Times laid-in (pp. 64-65) discussing Kipling s funeral at Westminster Abbey. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled but the gilt decorations still clear and attractive. The corners and spine tips have been slightly bumped and exhibit some tiny splits. Inside, the book is unmarked but there is a small rust stain from a paper clip on the title page which is also slightly split at the bottom. The clipping mentioned above has stained the pages where it is found. Both hinges are intact but the binding is cracked at the copyright page. The binding however remains tight and sound.
