Item description from seller

First edition. Octavo. 116pp. Bound in modern maroon cloth, light brown leather spine label lettered in gold, maroon endleaves and modern plain paper fly leaves. Title page is toned and professionally mended at bottom left edge at the gutter, and has two small tears with minor loss at the upper and lower corner tips, else very good. Famous as a ‘scandalmonger’ in Scotland and America, James T. Callender (1758-1803) was a popular and controversial political pamphleteer and journalist, best known today for his newspaper articles alleging that Thomas Jefferson had children with Sally Hemings. After immigrating to the United States in 1793, Callender worked as a reporter for *The Philadelphia Gazette* and gained notoriety in the 1790s for exposing Alexander Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds, a married woman. He was imprisoned for nine months in 1800 under the Sedition Act, for remarks he had made against President John Adams. A nice copy of Callender’s Philadelphia pamphlet on taxation, in which he opposes recently passed Congressional taxes on snuff and sugar. Scarce in the trade. *Evans* 28383; *Sabin* 10071; *ESTC* W29417.…
