A scarce photo illustrated volume of social customs of the Chinese in Peking. Coming at a time when The Republic of China was at odds with communist influence. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition. Royal octavo, pp xviii, 139. With full page map of the city and errata notes at rear. Bound in red cloth covered hard boards, black lettering to spine and black decoration and lettering to the upper board. Illustrated with fifty full page plates from photographs, many of the photographs by Chinese photographers. Swallow was a China-born and resident academic and university professor with was obviously enthralled by the city of Peking. His tour of the "bye ways and alleys" takes in the Hutongs, the city's residents and street vendors, the 'Flower Streets and Willow Lanes' of the prostitutes, theatres and actors (with their portraits), festivals and ceremonies, pawn shops and money lenders, streets and street names and the city's political life.
