1932. First edition. xii (lacking half-title, if issued), 127pp. a frontispiece and many black and white illustrations. Lieutenant Colonel Robert D. T. Alexander served in India as the Chief Engineer for the Indian State Railways. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake (1874-1953) was an English physician, officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and a double recipient of the Victoria Cross. The authors write in their Preface "This book which we have, with some trepidation, ventured to write, will not depict any exciting incidents in the realm of shikar, its main object being to give exact illustrations of the footprints of such wild animals of the plains of India and Burma of which we have had personal experience. We have only been tempted to write the book at all with the object of assisting the novice in the intelligent study of those signs of the jungle, a knowledge of which will avoid him being dependent entirely on a tracker who may be good, bad or indifferent, or blundering aimlessly along through the domain of the animal he is pursuing, blindly trusting to luck." The book has fairly recently been re-backed and re-cased in the original red cloth covered boards with the original spine overlaid onto new red cloth, and as a result the book is tight and secure. There is gold titling on the spine and black titling on the front board. The boards have shelf wear with soiling and staining and the corners are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth on the corner tips. There is fading along about 1" of the spine and top edges of both boards and the original spine is more noticeably faded with small pieces missing from both ends. The contents are tight and the book has new grey endpapers. The pages are clean apart from a few scattered small stains and marks from finger smudges, etc., and a few of the pages and plates have a crease across the top corner. A stiff sheet of card with a serrated fore edge is bound in between pages 40 and 41 and we think that this may have had a publisher's order form or something similar attached. There is no inscription.
