First edition. Hardcover. Original dark brown cloth with ribbed and blindstamped design and some spotting on the cloth. Spine lettered in gilt with shallow loss on its extremities. 6 (recommendations) + 312 pp. Vintage label on front pastedown: "No. 449 Freehold Young Ladies' Seminary." 1911 presentation on front free end page. Scattered light foxing. This 1848 book argues against the abolition of capital punishment. The lectures are designed to show the origin, nature, tendency, and alliances of the popular movement to abolish the death penalty, framing it as a popular but misguided effort.
