First printing. 12mo (20cm). Publisher's green cloth, decoratively titled in gilt on spine and front cover; viii,380pp; frontispiece portrait and three unnumbered leaves of plates. Mild rubbing to cloth; neat repair to front endpaper at gutter; Very Good. Pencil ownership signature of a Marjorie Patterson to front free endpaper. Somewhat uncommon first printing of this fictionalized historical account of the 1791 Pennsylvania anti-tax uprising known as the Whiskey Rebellion. Wiley (1856-1955) was the long-time owner and editor of the Elizabeth [PA] Herald. The book had some popularity, especially in Western Pennsylvania, and was reprinted through the 1940s; the first printing is elusive. SMITH W-624.
