First American edition, translated from the German by Sara J.I. Lawson. Fine in near fine dustwrapper with slight wear at the top of the front panel. The first chapters of this novel were filmed several times, most influentially in 1925 as *Variete* (or *Variety* in the U.S.) directed by Ewald André Dupont, and featuring Emil Jennings as Boss Huller, confessing his crimes to the prison warden.
