About the Author

Stephen Smale is a professor at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago and at both the University of Chicago Mathematics and Computer Science departments and is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He and his wife Clara have been collecting minerals for more than 30 years. Many of Smale's mineral specimens can be seen in the book―The Smale Collection: Beauty in Natural Crystals.
