Very scarce First Printing of First edition published in 1931. Original ribbed navy cloth with gilt decoration front cover, gilt lettering spine. The book is EX-LIBRARY in original covers, has no spine number or spine sticker (library never made any external number marks), faint traces of tape marks front and rear cover (probably where dust jacket had been adhered ---- jacket missing now), no EP pockets or library marks, but lacking the blank FFEP, only library marks are fore-edge stamps (see photos), "WITHDRAWN" stamped on short-title, faint smudge bottom of title page where possibly something erased (probably a call number or date since the library stamp on bottom fore-edge covers a much larger area) ---- no other library marks on any other pages. The covers are quite clean and only lightly rubbed, the gilt on the front cover and spine is very bright, the binding is solid, pages quite clean with no smudge marks, no writing or marking on pages, minor foxing last couple of pages but no foxing on other pages which is rare for this book. The pages are relatively brittle and prone to tearing. This example has a single lower margin 1cm clean tear (like a split) on pages 100, 102, 190, 205 and 275; single 1.5cm tear lower margin of pages 116, 178, 201, 209; single 2cm clean tear lower margin of pages 193 and 195. These tears are not obvious unless one is carefully looking for them. Every page has been examined for condition problems. The tears were caused by turning pages while curling them too sharply = splitting the page at the lower margin due to the stress. Very common for this book. Overall a better than usual condition example of this classic monograph. The book measures 313mm tall x 240mm, and has 227 pages, 200 b/w photo plates with over 2000 different crystal photos.
