Illustrated with a black-and-white photograph of Social Register founder Louis Keller. "The origins of the Association are to be found in 19th-century visiting lists. These were the names and addresses of the preferred social contacts of prominent families, alphabetically arranged. In 1886, Louis Keller, described in his obituary as "known to more persons here and abroad than any other one resident of New York," had the idea of consolidating the most important of these lists. His compilation was composed primarily of descendants of the early Dutch and English settlers of his city as well as others intrinsic to the Associations' definition of Society as it was then. Society today is much more diverse and this diversity is reflected in our membership. Over the many decades since its founding that the Social Register has continued to serve its members as the definitive and most reliable social index, this list has been expanded to include a broad representation of American Society, including in its listings individuals and families whose significant contributions in many fields of endeavor merit recognition, regardless of race, creed or color, and encompassing in its coverage the entire nation as well as reflecting an international presence. Mr. Keller's formula met with great success and by 1918 there were 18 annual volumes representing 26 cities, as well as the Social Register Locater, a volume that included all the names listed in the various regional editions and provided quick and easy reference to them. Individual books, as well as the Locater, were published annually until 1976, when they were consolidated into a single definitive book listing the nation's foremost families. The most recent addition to the Association's publications is the Social Register Locator, which when used in conjunction with the Social Register, allows members to easily locate by state and zip code members of the Association residing in different areas of the country as well as abroad." -- from the Preliminary Page.
