The first edition of this very scarce work.This volume solves the questions posed in Charles Hutton's 1798 work 'Course of Mathematics'.This is Thomas Stephens Davies' most important work, and provides solutions for four thousand mathematical questions of varying interest and degrees of difficulty.From the library of American-British mathematician David Singmaster, with his ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Singmaster was emeritus professor of mathematics at London South Bank University, and was a puzzle historian, a big fan of mechanical puzzles, and an early adopter and promoter of the Rubik's Cube. In the original cloth binding. Externally, the front board is detached but present. Loss to the backstrip and rear joint. Light rubbing and marks to the cloth. Spine is faded. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound, first thirty-three pages are working loose. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots. Good Only.
