Second printing, two volumes (complete), small quarto size, approx. 850 pp. "The Song of Roland" is "one of the earliest and most famous chansons de geste, based on the 8th-century Battle of Roncevaux Pass where Charlemagne's rearguard was ambushed" (n.b., quote from Wiki). The earliest known version dates back to around CE 1040, with changes being made through around 1115; the final version of the epic poem is approximately 4,000 lines. This work is based on the "Oxford Text", the single extant manuscription, held at the Bodleian.
