Add to basketFirst American edition, one of 2000 copies. One of numerous works inspired by Goethe s poem of the same name, the novel centers on Frank Braun who tries to manipulate a cult of Evangelical Christians for his own gain. The work was Ewers debut novel and the first in the so-called "Frank Braun" trilogy. Controversial at the time of its publication, as the work explored ecstatic and mystical experience, ritual, obsession, and blood play. First edition. Black cloth decorated in gilt and red, illustrated endpaper, fore- and lower edges uncut. 9 1/8 x 6 1/8 in. [viii], 337, [1] pp. Frontispiece and five black-and-white illustrations by Mahone Blaine. Very good; hinges a bit weak, head of spine bumped.
