Soviet Atomic Espionage (Joint Committee Print, 82nd Congress, 1st Session, April 1951)

Important Cold War congressional report prepared for the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy during the height of early U.S.Soviet nuclear rivalry. Issued shortly after the convictions of Klaus Fuchs, Harry Gold, and David Greenglass, and following the defection of Bruno Pontecorvo, the report examines how Soviet intelligence penetrated the Manhattan Project and related atomic programs. The volume contains extensive case studies of Klaus Fuchs, Bruno Pontecorvo, Allan Nunn May, David Greenglass, and Harry Gold, together with discussions of espionage techniques, security failures, FBI investigations, and classified weapons information transmitted to the USSR. Part II summarizes additional allegations against figures such as Arthur Adams, Clarence Hiskey, Martin David Kamen, Steve Nelson, and Joseph Weinberg, while Part III addresses miscellaneous security incidents involving atomic materials. At 222 pages, this Government Printing Office edition became one of the foundational documentary sources on atomic espionage before the release of the Venona decrypts and remains an important primary source for collectors of Cold War, intelligence, Manhattan Project, and U.S. government publications.
