First American edition of this collection of letters offering the everyday experiences of French people in occupied France during World War II from the Resistance to the POWs to those under the Vichy, originally sold to benefit French prisoners of war. "Remarkably varied and vivid letters from French men and women of all social strata and in varying frames of mind. The strangling of the French press and the difficulties of censorship under which American newspapermen now operate in both 'zones' of France give these spontaneous and often very courageous expressions of French opinion a direct political value" (Foreign Affairs). Book fine, dust jacket extremely good with light wear to extremities and a bit of toning to spine. Seller Inventory # 211
