Contemp. three-quarter lea. iv, (viii)-xviii, 455 pp. Thirteen chromolithographed and lithographed plates, some folding + 5 woodcut portrait plates + very numerous woodcuts in the text mostly of apparatus. Tear to an index leaf with old repair (no losses), joints rubbed; otherwise, a very good, crisp copy. A useful and attractively illustrated work on nineteenth century spectroscopy with considerable emphasis on instrumentation. The first edition was published at Brunswick in 1870; the first English edition, edited and with notes by William Huggins, appeared in 1872, the same year as this American edition.
