Bewick is best known for his writing and illustrating two work of natural history, 'A General History of Quadrupeds', and 'A History of British Birds', alongside illustrating editions of Aesop's 'Fables' throughout his life. He is considered to be the founder of wood engraving, as his works were pioneering in the medium.Four pages of adverts to the rear of Volume II. In a rebacked half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed. Leather is lifting to the joints. Minor bumping to the extremities, resulting in a little loss of leather. A few marks to the boards. A small amount of loss to the rear board of Volume I, and to the front board of Volume II. Spine are age-toned. Lacking the spine labels. Front hinge of Volume I is tender. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots, mostly to the plates. Repair to the head of the engraved titles. Ink to pages 153 to 155 of Volume I. Closed tear to the plate facing page 87 in Volume II. Good Only.
