Tired externally - would benefit from some attention the binding - this would normally be a work in excess of £1000-1400.A detailed work exploring the dogs used in the sports of the field, this was the third published English dog book, known for its detailed engravings.This work includes chapters on different dog breeds, noting their habits, personalities, and uses in sports.Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, and twelve plates.Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, and twelve plates.Collated, complete.By William Taplin.Engravings by Thomas Bewick. Bewick is best known for his writing and illustrating two work of natural history, 'A General History of Quadrupeds', and 'A History of British Birds', alongside illustrating editions of Aesop's 'Fables' throughout his life. He is considered to be the founder of wood engraving, as his works were pioneering in the medium.Four pages of adverts to the rear of Volume II. In a rebacked half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed. Leather is lifting to the joints. Minor bumping to the extremities, resulting in a little loss of leather. A few marks to the boards. A small amount of loss to the rear board of Volume I, and to the front board of Volume II. Spine are age-toned. Lacking the spine labels. Front hinge of Volume I is tender. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots, mostly to the plates. Repair to the head of the engraved titles. Ink to pages 153 to 155 of Volume I. Closed tear to the plate facing page 87 in Volume II. Good Only.
