But unlike most boys his age, he’s fated to play a pivotal role in the eons-spanning war going on between forces in nature. As the merciless Woman turns humanity into pet trees and insects, Cody, his friends, and his little sister set out on a quest to find the mysterious Stardust Kid, who can change the tide of the war and save the planet. DeMatteis and Ploog, with more than 50 years of comic experience between them, borrowed elements from Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series and Clive Barker’s Abarat books to create a fantasy that is conceptually rich but somewhat light in adventure. Dense with narration and focusing largely on self-discovery, this slow, thoughtful tale will appeal most to patient readers who appreciate more introspection that action. Grades 4-7. --Jesse Karp
