PreSchool-Grade 2 Using prettily washed scenes which blend a flat realism and fantasy, Heyduck-Huth constructs simple stories that should encourage children to treasure elements of natural history. The Starfish follows a day's activity on the beach, during which a dried-out starfish is overlooked or nearly crushed several times until finally it is discovered by Anna, who takes the shell home and adds it to her treasure box of pebbles and shells. The Strawflower begins in summer and follows a bunch of strawflowers into winter survival and ultimate use to decorate a snow woman, people's buttonholes, a dinner table, and a Christmas tree; Anna finally adds one of the strawflowers to her collection. Each book ends with two questions promising future books and inviting readers to collect such treasures. The attractive, flat pictures are warm and sometimes dreamy; they have a tinge of European flavor and sometimes introduce fanciful or unfamiliar charactersvery old-fashioned nuns with a school class, a simply dressed flute player who looks more the medieval minstrel than modern street musician, Anna as an angel in the night.
