A probable first Everyman's library edition (1929) of John Howard's examination of prisons in England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany and several other European countries. Per Donald Armstrong Ross, p.253, the author ". . .had himself been a prisoner in France in 1756. . .[this] book was a powerful influence towards prison reform." Originally published in 1777, this version is an abridgement of the 1784 third edition. With an introduction and notes by Kenneth Ruck. Everyman's Library catalogue no. 835, an entry in EL's 'Science' series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In EL binding style 3 with full pale green cloth-covered boards and gilt-stamped spine titling, blindstamped Eric Ravilious-designed 'shell' to cover and brown topstain. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- With Maltese bookseller's sticker & inkings to front paste-down, severe fading to spine gilding (making it virtually unreadable), else a tightly bound, unmarked, sound copy.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; xxii, 306, 16 (ads) pages. …
