First English edition, preceding the American. This copy has May rather than October ads, and all three of the "first state" points listed by Johnson but not confirmed (or denied) by BAL. Because the book was staples rather than sewn, copies in really good condition are hard to come by. 1 vols. 8vo. Ellery Queen cites Twain's many contributions to detective fiction in QUEEN'S QUORUM, but ignores this collection of stories that begins with a classic spoof of a bungling detective; he included it in his 1942 bibliography. BAL 3404 Original red pictorial cloth, gilt lettering. This copy has small holes in the joints where the staples have rubbed through, a corner of the title page torn by erasure, and the spine is slightly darkened, otherwise a good tight copy with nice hinges First English edition, preceding the American.
