Book Condition: fine; the faintest signs of wear to very small areas of edges, interior text block unmarked and unmarred. A sharp copy of a scarce title. Worldcat shows only three institutional holdings: Princeton, Auburn, and Birmingham Public Library. This Phd thesis is, of course, the basis for the book of the same title, published by Pantheon in 1994 and honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. A telling quote from the acknowledgements."Nonetheless, if this dissertation becomes a book, my mother will buy a dozen copies, from Bloomingdales." If this dissertation becomes a book. Well, it not only became a book, it became a Pulitzer Prize Finalist book! James Goodman is the author of essays, short stories, book reviews, letters, and three books: Stories of Scottsboro, Blackout, and But Where Is the Lamb? He is a former Guggenheim Fellow. Stories of Scottsboro was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University, Newark, where he teaches close reading, critical thinking, and creative writing in the history department and in the MFA program in creative writing.
