This is an advance reading copy (called a Review Copy on the cover). Laid in loosely at front is a signed typescript letter on Compass Press stationery, dated 14 October 1992, from the publisher (and the author's son), W.D. Howells, to evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr, asking for advice on the dust jacket for the upcoming hardcover editon and for Mayr's thoughts about the book. Free front endpaper has stamp indicating this work was not retained by an academic library (never accessioned); top edge has small, light stain; tight, text clean. 237 p., illustrated. The free front endpaper has a note stating, "This edition has not been copy-edited or proofed. Illustrations have not been finally rendered and many are yet to come. There are conflicts between captions and illustrations actually shown herein." [b 116].
