About the book: (From the dust jacket)
The Story Of JACKIE THIMBLE by JAMES REEVES, Pictures by Edward Ardizzone. There was a boy called Jackie Thimble; he was thought both neat and nimble. His height was one foot four. Now Jackie was an only child, he liked a joke, but was not wild; he sang or whistled half the day to make his old parents glad and gay. So all were happy in their way, until one Dreadful Day -- Jackie Thimble disappeared. Now, Jackie had gone out to play. And as he wandered through the streets, he chanced to see a tall, round pillar box. The postman had left it open wide, so Jackie climbed inside, He felt like Scott discovering the Pole, Then, the postman closed the door. "Mr. Postman, please let me out!" To keep his courage high Jackie raised his voice in song -- "The Minstrel Boy" and "Home Sweet Home,'' "The First Noel" - he sang them well. Mrs. Cox and Miss de Vere happened to be passing along just as Jackie was finishing his song. "I do declare, dear Mrs. Cox, we've found a singing pillar box. How Jackie Thimble is restored to his fond parents with his pockets jingling with bright coins is the delightful tale that James Reeves tells in gay verse, and Edward Ardizzone illustrates with his inimitable pictures.
