Add to basketStated first edition. The front free endpaper features an inscription dated October 1935, the year of publication: "Robert E. Dietz from his mother - New York, October '35". Front & rear two-toned cloth boards have light water damage for which only a touch of red ink bleed is visible on the inner boards front & rear, else hardcover unaffected; gilt on spine is bright. There is light page damage to the top edges of Chapter 15 spread (see photo, book is unpaginated) else pages are excellent, clean & bright w/ no other marks other than page toning, commensurate with age.
Near fine unclipped dust wrapper w/ $2.00 price on front flap; there is light water damage on the backside of the DJ (see photo) but it was printed on thicker premium stock & does not extend to front & wrapper is otherwise bright & clean with a sunned spine, slight wear & overall toning.
Published by Equinox Cooperative Press in 1935, a company co-founded by illustrator Lynd Ward three years earlier, shows its fine book craftsmanship. The superb production work of the Bauer Lithograph Company (illustrations) and The Spiral Press (printing) allowed this book to be preserved beautifully despite light water damage & age.
Robert E. Dietz III received this book from his mother when he was about 20 years old. The Dietz family was famous for their iconic kerosene lanterns of New York. They maintained strong connections with New York & the Dietz business, but in 1910 established residency in NM, later known as the historic Dietz Farms in the North Valley of Albuquerque. This book was acquired directly from the estate of Robert Dietz IV (1941-2026), a noted entomologist, Albuquerque book dealer, and son of RE Dietz III.
A well-preserved, first edition copy with the scarce dust jacket of this powerful 1935 biography of American journalist John Reed, featuring lithographs throughout by renowned wood engraver Lynd Ward & the multi-generational tie-in to the renowned Dietz family.
