Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Palmer, Lemuel (illustrator). First Edition Later Printing. Designed as a companion volume to the author's "Tales from the Storyteller's House,'' set again in the Old House under the Great Elm, & combining the author's love of nature with his ability to tell stories to children. Orig. published in 1938, this is a 1940 reprint of that First Edition, in the same 195 pages with a Frontispiece & 7 lovely full-page plates in soft watercolors by artist Lemuel Palmer, whom the author praised as bringing his animals "alive." Hardcover 8vo has green cloth-covered boards lettered in red, with a red spine lettered in green. Condition is VG: very clean & bright with modest edgewear & rubbing to extremities. Binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with just a hint of tanning. Flaws: white-out marks on title page & cracked hinge same page; a few ink marks to bottom outside page edges, dust dulling & light soil spots to other such edges. The price-clipped DJ is downgraded to Good due to minor edgewear, soil, small chips at both ends of spine, & a few colored marker marks to both covers; beautifully protected in new clear mylar cover.
