Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First volume of the immediately popular Strand Magazine, featuring a story ('The Voice Of Science') by Conan Doyle, with Sherlock Holmes yet to appear (see Vol.2). Much else of wide ranging interest here however. Bar small loss to head of the half title, and a little minor spotting early and late, all is in VG, clean and bright order. Nice tight binding with all edges of block marbled. Smart red cloth with gilt titling to spine. A couple of minor bumps and spine lightly faded but highly presentable. Edited by George Newnes. 658 pp, 9.75 x 6.75 , 8vo, hardcover 3/4 leather. In good condition, with minor rubbing and wear to exterior, primarily along edges and corners. Light cracking to hinge near rear. Text block remains bound well and in good condition. Light markings and marginalia. Staining around edges and corners of some pages. Nicely illustrated throughout with black-and-white sketches. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce first biannual printing, along with the inclusion of The Voice of Science by Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). While Sherlock Holmes had existed in print since 1887, he would become popular in the July 1891 issue, which included the short story A Scandal in Bohemia. COLL1891ADFX.
