Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 340 "OUR ONCE TRANS-ATLANTIC BRETHEREN, BUT NOW THE ONLY REMAINING REPUBLICANS IN THE CIVILISED WORLD" (Preface) First edition. "This large and most ill-arranged volume contains, apparently, whatever Mr. Janson could recollect of America, aiding his memory by a few notes and memorandums. He went to America with high expectations, engaged in several speculations, all of which failed, and after thirteen years' absence, returned to England, where, as many others have done since, he vented his spleen in writing a book" (Sabin recording the Monthly Review, LIII. 443).
