Add to basketA first edition of this parodical collection of verses from Begbie, with original colour illustrations by Francis Carruthers Gould. First edition. With twenty-seven pages of colour illustrations surrounding verse. Collated complete. A parody of the German children's book Der Struwwelpeter or "shock-headed Peter," comprising illustrated and rhymed stories with a clear moral lesson. This comical edition, appearing a year after their success with Political Stuwwelpeter, displays an alphabet of cartoons satirising eminent people in late Victorian society. With caricatures including the Kaiser, Rudyard Kipling, Lord Kitchener, Henry Irving, Tsar Nicholas II, Emile Zola, and more. Written by Edward Harold Begbie, an English journalist and author who wrote political satire, comedy, fiction, science fiction, plays and poetry. Illustrated by Francis Carruthers Gould, a British political cartoonist and caricaturist. In the original quarter cloth binding with pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and light chipping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and discolouration to the boards. Light loss of the paper covers with marks to the boards. Two small splits to the cloth of the spine with minor loss to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd handling mark. A 2" closed tear to page 15. Light spotting to the endpapers. Good.
