First edition hard back binding in publisher's original decorated emerald green cloth covers, with new green morocco spine, gilt title and black tools to the spine, the red rail (Aphanapteryx bonasia) is an extinct species of flightless rail, it was endemic to the Mascarene island of Mauritius and features in gilt to the front cover and to the title page, new end papers. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains engraved frontispiece, [xviii], 512 pp [+ 48 page publisher's catalogue], 2 folding coloured maps, 45 full-page and part-page monochrome engravings throughout. Old feint tide mark to the bottom of the frontispiece and title page, couple of small spots to the fore edge and in Very Good sound and stable condition. Member of the P.B.F.A.
