Add to basketThe extremely scarce and sought-after first issue of Hemingway's novel with perhaps the most famous error in American printing history, the word "stopped" on page 181. It also has the misspelling " downstaris" on page 169 and "BOOK THREE" on page 235. This book was once part of a private lending library (the kind that charged 25 cents a week in the early 20th century) and has had some minor restoration performed professionally. A chip has been restored on the front label. It can be detected but blends quite well. The head of spine has been reinforced from the back side. The rear free endpaper was missing when I obtained the book and was restored with a vintage endpaper that matches perfectly. A sticker was removed from the front free endpaper- faint traces of its former location can be detected. Defects that remain after restoration include light bumps to corners, some darkening and wear to spine label, very light spine lean, some light wrinkling to rear pastedown. Wear is still visible in both head and tail of spine. There is a crease in the page with the Ecclesiastes quote and the first page of Book I. Soiling to top edge. Overall a very good to very good minus copy after restoration. Furnished with a professionally printed facsimile of the first issue dust jacket. As always, photos are the best description.
