Now that the major dangers to maintaining The Biosphere in an environmentally acceptable way have been recognized, the single most important task facing mankind is to take the necessary steps to avert those dangers.
In this volume, the complete range of issues is surveyed in a masterly manner by two of the world's leading environmentalists, Dr. Martin W. Holdgate, Director of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and Dr. Mostafa K. Tolba, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (INEP) (IUCN).
Other specialist themes are dealt with by recognized experts. First, the physical and biological problems of the environment are addressed: the atmosphere, the oceans and coastal waters, freshwater supplies, agriculture and forestry, and the maintenance of biodiversity as an irreplaceable source of genetic resource - then the theme shifts to man, his fertility, his behaviour, the instabilities of his societies, and his cultural and political activities.
