A vintage historical novel for young readers by Cornelia Meigs, the author of Invincible Louisa. Set in the early 1800s, it follows a young man’s adventure as he helps float a huge raft of logs down the Mississippi from the northern forests to the sawmills of St. Louis. The story is full of river hazards, rival lumbermen, and frontier details, and it was named a Newbery Honor Book in 1933. A good find for collectors of Newbery titles, vintage children’s literature, or Midwest and river history, and still an enjoyable read. The pages are clean with no highlighting or underlining. Missing dust jacket. The front inner cover has a light stain in the crease. The book is in good used condition with normal shelf wear.
